Many of their staff and cooks have been working there for years and have become local celebrities. Waitress Deena Vongxay has been serving happy customers for 32 years. The longevity of the staff, as well as the great food and service, are the reasons for the popularity of this downtown village bistro.
Guests enjoy homemade comfort breakfasts and lunches, inside or outside on the beautiful patio, while people-watching and taking in the sunshine and fresh ocean air. Three to four times a year, retired Marine officers who flew A-4 Skyhawks, during the Vietnam War (and after), gather to meet at their favorite breakfast place in Carlsbad. These Marine Vets have been coming from near and far to meet at the Daily News Café for more than a dozen years.
Breakfast is served all day every day, and lunch is served from 11am to 4pm. Their very popular menu includes a wide assortment of omelets ranging in price from $9.95 to $13.95. All omelets are three eggs and served with hash browns, sautéed red potatoes, fresh fruit or refried beans and your choice of toast, biscuit, or blueberry muffin. Other breakfast favorites include Eggs Benedict, Huevos Rancheros, and a Breakfast Burrito. Locals love their Belgian Waffles, Buttermilk Pancakes, French Toast, and wide assortment of Crepes. Lunch includes craft beer pairings with their 1/3 pound Belly Bomber Burgers, Chicken Sandwiches and many other sandwich and salad options. We love their Half Sandwich and Soup combo and recommend their Chicken Salad Sandwich served with any of their delicious seasonal soups. If they have it, try the tomato bisque!
